In 2015, Pat was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He was given less than a year to live. Due to his illness, he was no longer able to work. Pat’s wife, Erica, was then responsible for all their living expenses. Erica found herself struggling to pay bills. That’s when a friend told Erica about a non-profit organization called Kelly’s Dream.
Kelly’s Dream understands that treatment and research are not the only aspects of cancer. The emotional and financial burden that it puts on a family is often overlooked. By hosting fundraisers and raising money, Kelly’s Dream offers direct financial support for those families in need. These fundraisers and other programs, the organization hosts, bring hope into people’s lives, providing patients and their families with a reason to keep fighting.
Kelly Ware, the founder of Kelly’s Dream, is a metastatic melanoma survivor, a mother, a daughter, a wife, and a friend. Because of her experience battling cancer, she has dedicated herself to helping the “human side of cancer: the side of worry, struggle, and financial strain.” She also wants to expose the reality of melanoma. So, Kelly’s Dream started the Check and Protect Program, through which they teach about sun safety to schools, businesses, and organizations.
Kelly’s Dream helped Pat and his family with their monthly mortgage and gas & electric bill. Releasing the financial burden enabled them to concentrate on Pat’s treatment. Sadly, Pat passed away in 2016, but the support from Kelly’s Dream will never be forgotten by Erica.
